Callaway
Callaway was the surname of the investor who was approached by Hickory Sticks Golfing equipment. Initially, at the time Ely was a very successful textiles producer and supplier who also had vested interests in other commercial ventures. Hickory Sticks approached him at a time when he had just sold his vineyards for nine million U.S. Dollars.
Ely also had a fondness for the game of golf and in the early eighties he bought a half share in Hickory Sticks and it was renamed Callaway Hickory Stick USA. Two years later he bought the other half of the company from its original founders, Dick De La Cruz and Richard Parente.
In 1983 he was actually selling clubs out of the back of his Cadillac car! The company name was changed to its present format, Callaway Golf in 1988.
Callaway Big Bertha
The Big Bertha golf club from the Callaway equipment range was designed by a snooker/pool cue designer. Richard C. Hemstetter was hired by in 1986 as a design consultant. In a short period of time he had be employed full time and was made head chief club designer and it was he that implemented computer aided design and manufacturing for the Big Bertha range of golf clubs. On its inception, the original Big Bertha driver was a meaty 190cc steel club head which was upped in 1997 to a
hefty 270cc. It also has a distinctive ping when hitting the golf ball correctly.
Callaway golf forced wedges
Ten years after the installation of Hemstetter as chief golf club designer, the position was handed to Roger Cleveland and after many hours at the P.C. And drawing board, the Callaway forced wedge golf club was born and released on general sale in 2002. The actual heads were constructed in carbon steel and they had a unique 'U' groove on the face. Upon its release Callaway announced that they were in the process of designing new types of golf balls for better club to ball contact
and also spoke of a 170 million dollar investment in its research. Three years later, Callaway golf balls were born. Boeing aircraft and aeronautical computers were used to research the flight of the golf ball.
